Healthcare Career Awareness Week
For the week of August 4th thru the 8th, 2025, West Central Development Council/LWIA 21 would like to highlight careers in healthcare industry, and educational institutions, who support local healthcare and career pathway efforts for Greene, Macoupin, Montgomery, Morgan, Scott, and Shelby Counties.

South Central Illinois Regional Workforce Training and Innovation Center (SCI) - Litchfield, Illinois
The South Central Illinois Regional Workforce Training and Innovation Center (SCI) was built through the shared vision of nine school districts working together to prepare students for real-world success. Located in the heart of the Litchfield Industrial Park, SCI connects students directly with career pathways in high-demand fields through hands-on training, industry partnerships, and innovative programs.
The SCI Center is more than just a building, it’s a regional hub for workforce development which empowers students, supports employers, and strengthens the future of our communities. The Center offers two healthcare-focused programs for high school students interested in medical careers: Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
The CNA program is designed to prepare students to support nurses in various healthcare settings, including nursing homes, hospitals, and home-health care. Students receive both classroom instruction and hands-on training in basic patient care, such as assisting with daily activities, monitoring vital signs, maintaining hygiene, and documenting medical information. The program boasts a 100% pass rate on the state certification exam, reflecting its strong instructional quality and student preparation. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to become certified CNAs and can either enter the healthcare workforce directly or continue their education in nursing or related fields.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Lewis and Clark Community College - Godfrey, Illinois
Lewis and Clark Community College (LC) was founded in 1970. It offers nearly 40 degree and certificate programs, workforce training, GED completion, dual-credit programs for high school students, and transfer pathways with Illinois universities and other community colleges.
LC was the first community college in the U.S. to operate a nurse-managed clinic, offering accessible healthcare to underserved populations and supported by mobile health units. The Lewis & Clark Family Health Clinic won a national MetLife Foundation Community College Excellence Award in 2010.
Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Human Services
The AAS in Human Services begins in Fall 2025 at Lewis and Clark Community College, with enrollment already in progress. The program targets individuals who want to work as paraprofessionals in social services—supporting clients with intellectual or physical differences, mental health challenges, youth, older adults, and others needing community assistance. Students will gain practical abilities in clinical interviewing, assessment, crisis intervention, and ethical decision‑making.

Human Services ProgramÂ
The Human Services program at L&C prepares students to help individuals and families navigate life’s challenges, cope with difficult situations, and improve their quality of life. This program is ideal for students who want to enter the workforce, those already working in human services who wish to expand their skills, or students planning to transfer to a four-year college or university to pursue degrees in social work, psychology, human services, or sociology.
